Piece of trailer history raises $7000 for charity

A nameplate constructed of gun barrel metal, from one of five historic ‘retired’ Drake Trailers, has fetched $7000 at a charity auction to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.

As part of Drake Trailers’ major sponsorship of Julie and Eamonn Gavin’s charity drive from Brisbane to Perth, via Melbourne, the company donated one of only five original nameplates to be auctioned at the official charity drive send-off for Julie and Eamonn at Drake Trailer’s manufacturing facility.

With a large crowd of transport industry figures on hand for the charity drive send-off, bidding for the nameplate heated up quickly and continued until Donn Todd, former owner of Brisbane-based heavy haulage operator, Rocklea Carrying Co, secured the nameplate with his $7,000 bid.

Fitting memento for fifty years in transport

Mounted on a wooden plaque with a certificate of authenticity guaranteeing its originality, Donn Todd said he felt the item represented a fitting memento for a successful 50-year career in heavy haulage road transport and although he hadn’t decided on a final location for the highly prized item, “it will be on show”.

"My father founded Rocklea Carrying Co, it was in the family for 50 years, like Drake Trailers, we had a good 50 years," Todd said.

Drake Trailers has been at the forefront of trailer manufacturers in Australia since 1958. From its manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Brisbane, the family-owned company has sustained its enviable reputation as one of the leading transport trailer manufacturers by maintaining its focus on outstanding build quality and customer service excellence.

Drake Trailers’ heavy transport trailers are built to last, using only the toughest high tensile Australian, Japanese and Swedish steel. Evidence of their durability and rock-solid reliability is their consistently high resale value.
